REO MĀORI

Depuis 1987, le maori partage avec l'anglais le statut de langue officielle de la Nouvelle-Zélande. Proche du tahitien et du rarotongan, il appartient à la branche polynésienne de la famille austronésienne. Parlé principalement dans l'île du Nord et dans la région de la ville d'Auckland, il possède de nombreuses variantes dialectales dont celle de Waikato a servi de base au maori standard. L'alphabet latin, composé de 15 lettres plus un macron sur les voyelles longues, fut introduit par les missionnaires au 19ème siècle. En régression face à l'anglais, il est enseigné dans les écoles afin de le conserver et une chaîne de télévision lui est même réservée depuis 2004.
