* L'arménien emploie un alphabet particulier. Pour des raisons pratiques, la langue est transcrite en caractères latins. 

Parlée dans le Caucase du Sud au carrefour des civilisations turque, caucasienne et iranienne, la langue arménienne, âgée de plus de 2500 ans, constitue un groupe isolé au sein des langues indo-européennes. Celle-ci coexiste sous deux formes dialectales, l'une orientale officiellement parlée dans la république d'Arménie, et l'autre occidentale principalement en Europe et au Proche-Orient. Si l'arménien occidental a emprunté du vocabulaire au français, au turc et au persan durant son histoire, l'arménien oriental a subi l'influence du russe pendant la période soviétique. Son alphabet très ancien fut créé au Vème siècle par un moine du nom de Mesrop Machtotz.
